CASE STUDY: INTEGRATED DRAINAGE & GROUNDWORKS EXPERTISE
WJ Shirley were instructed to conduct a drainage survey on a commercial warehouse site near Leicester.
Initial Site Concerns
Whilst on site, the Site Manager raised concerns regarding a reoccurring flooding issue on the site, and we found that silt and debris build up was found to be the cause of this, with the recommended solution to be high-pressure jetting.
However, it was discovered that the drainage system layout was unsuitable for maintenance requirements as the existing manholes were too far from the drains for it to be effective. Therefore, jetting couldn’t take place without constructing access points.
So, our civils team were instructed to add access points, along with a catchment pit at the downstream end to resolve the issue.
Short and Long Term Benefits
In the short term, this allowed for the identified blockages and build up to be removed, preventing the frequent flooding issues and any other associated consequences. In the long term, this development meant the site was now equipped for maintenance works for the future.
Value of PPM on Commercial Sites
Instructing PPM annually is best practice on a commercial site, and so the improved access would allow for this is to be completed throughly and effectively, preventing other costly and disruptive issues developing before they become a problem.
Furthermore, a number of additional excavations and renewed pipe sections were completed on site due to blockages and defects by our civils team, following our inspection report.
This project demonstrates our integrated approach to commercial drainage and groundworks, delivering practical, future-proof solutions that protect assets, reduce risk, and add long-term value.
By combining drainage consultancy and groundworks expertise, we managed the entire project from start to finish. Beyond completing the works required for pre-acquisition purposes, we also advised the client on the most appropriate long-term solution, ensuring the flooding issue was resolved permanently rather than temporarily.
